Dans une grande partie du film, comme dans le jeu, deux personnages de dos, dans un cabriolet lancé à vive allure, constitue le point de vue central qui s'offre au spectateur (ou au joueur). Dans ce jeu de 1986, la voiture démarre son périple en longeant les plages de Californie. Dans le film de Dino Risi, les 2 personnages font escale au bord de la méditerrané.Dans Outrun, les accidents, soulignés par un effet d'animation particulièrement impressionnante pour l'époque, sanctionnent les virages pris un peu trop vite. L'accident est le point final du film, qui se termine par la mort tragique d'un des deux personnages.
